Philippe, duc d'Orléans (Philippe Charles; 2 August 1674 – 2 December 1723), who was known as the Regent, was a French prince, soldier, and statesman who served as Regent of the Kingdom of France from 1715 to 1723. He is referred to in French as le Régent. He was the son of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans, and Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orléans. Born at his father's palace at Saint-Cloud, he was known from birth by the title of Duke of Chartres.

In 1692, Philippe married his first cousin Françoise Marie de Bourbon, the youngest legitimised daughter (légitimée de France) of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Named regent of France during the minority of Louis XV, his great-nephew and first cousin twice removed, the period of his de facto rule was known as the Regency (French: la Régence) (1715–1723). The Regency came to an end in February 1723, and the Duke of Orléans died at Versailles in December.

Christine Antoinette Charlotte Desmares (1682 – 12 September 1753), professionally known as M^lle Desmares, was a French stage actress. Scion of a notable comic actor family, she had an active stage career that spanned three decades, performing with the Comédie-Française from 1699 until her retirement in 1721; she was also remembered as a mistress of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Regent of France.

Marie Madeleine de La Vieuville, Marquise of Parabère (1693-1755), was a French aristocrat. She was the official mistress of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, during his tenure as regent of France during the minority of the infant King Louis XV of France. That role made her a well known public figure during the French regency years (1715-1723).

Florence Pellerin (fl. 1707), was a French ballet dancer and courtesan. She was the official mistress of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who was the regent of France during the minority of the infant King Louis XV. She was the mistress of the duke in 1696–1699.

She was engaged in the ballet of the Paris Opera under the stage name "Mademoiselle Florence". She was described as beautiful but not regarded to be very intelligent or entertaining, and the duke eventually tired of her and left her for Charlotte Desmares.

After, she became the official favorite of Louis II de Rohan-Chabot (1679–1738), son of Louis, Duke of Rohan, who caused a scandal by their open relationship, spending a fortune on her and having several children with her. The scandal caused the King to have her imprisoned in a convent by a lettre de cachet.
